Report on Milk Shops in Limerick

A letter dated February 14, 1906, addressed to the Gentlemen of the Limerick Corporation presents a report on the condition of milk shops in the city. The report is the result of an inspection conducted by the writer, accompanied by an Inspector of Dairies, in response to a request from the Public Health Committee.

The report emphasizes the importance of proper handling and sale of milk, considering it a crucial dietary item. The report mentions that there are approximately 200 milkshops in the city and that the inspection was carried out in a dozen of them. The writer notes that in every shop visited, Regulation 17 regarding dairies, cowsheds, and milkshops had not been complied with in terms of the sale of milk.

The writer expresses concern about the conditions observed in these milkshops. Many of these shops not only sold milk but also a variety of other items like turf, coal, paraffin oil, fish, meat, vegetables, and more. The report criticizes this practice as being opposed to basic sanitary standards. In each shop, the mistress of the house was the sole attendant, serving different items to customers with the same hand.

The report further highlights the dangers associated with impurities and contamination in milk. The writer points out that milk can carry germs that are not visible to the naked eye and emphasizes the importance of rigorous cleanliness in milking and handling procedures to prevent contamination. The writer refers to a Typhoid outbreak in the city the previous year that was attributed to contaminated milk and explains how certain diseases, such as tuberculosis, can also spread through milk.

The letter concludes by asserting that the Public Health Committee has a duty to ensure strict adherence to cleanliness and sanitation regulations in all milk shops, including proper storage and handling of milk, as well as enforcing Regulation 17 for the protection of public health.
