DRAMATIC COURTROOM SCENE: LIMERICK TRAMP ATTACKS WORKHOUSE OFFICIAL

A startling and dramatic incident unfolded within the walls of the courtroom during a hearing involving Patrick Looby, a tramp, who was facing charges of insubordination and assault against an attendant at the Fermoy Workhouse. The proceedings took an unexpected turn when Looby directed a violent outburst at Mr Gormley, Master of the Workhouse, further escalating the situation.

As Mr Gormley was providing his testimony as a witness, recounting the events leading to the charges, Looby seized the moment and charged at him with force, delivering a powerful blow that caused Mr Gormley to be knocked to the ground. The courtroom was filled with shock and chaos as the sudden attack unfolded.

Swift action was taken by Sergeant Barker and Constable Mannion, who quickly apprehended Looby and escorted him to the dock. His brazen behavior was met with stern condemnation from Colonel Colles, the chairman presiding over the proceedings. In the aftermath of the incident, Looby’s behavior was described as that of an “infernal ruffian and blackguard.”

Looby did not shy away from admitting his actions. He openly acknowledged striking the attendant and Mr Gormley, expressing his willingness to face the consequences. He brazenly stated that he would willingly serve a prison term for the attack, remarking that he would “do 12 months for a clout at him.”

The court handed down its verdict, reflecting the severity of Looby’s actions. He was sentenced to one month for insubordination, an additional month for assaulting the attendant, and a staggering two months for assaulting Mr Gormley. Additionally, in default of bail, he was handed a six-month sentence.

The shocking incident not only left a lasting impression on the courtroom but also underscored the tense emotions that can arise within legal proceedings, serving as a vivid reminder of the unpredictability that can unfold even in the midst of a formal courtroom setting.
