Strong Opposition and Calls for Improvement Surround the Education Bill

The Education Bill is currently facing significant opposition, with various groups and individuals expressing their concerns and urging for improvements to the measure proposed by Mr Birrell, the Minister of Education. The discontent is apparent across different spheres.

Mr Birrell asserted that the Education Bill enjoys unanimous support from every member of the Cabinet. On a similar occasion, Mr Morley reiterated the unity of the Cabinet, which comprises individuals from different backgrounds including Anglicans, Catholics, and agnostics. They all share the common goal of seeking a peaceful, organized, and lasting resolution to the education question. This resolution is founded on the principle they upheld during the elections: when public funds are expended, public control should prevail.

The Carlow Executive of the United Irish League, led by Very Reverend Canon Ryan, passed a resolution imploring the Irish Party to vigorously pursue the cause of equitable educational rights for English Catholics. They hope that the Irish members will collabourate with Catholic opinion leaders in England to strive for amendments to the bill that would benefit their community.

Meanwhile, the Catholic clerical managers of the Cashel and Emly Diocesan Association convened and expressed their solidarity with their Catholic counterparts in England. They highlighted the dire threat faced by Catholic schools and expressed their trust in the Irish Party’s commitment to advocating for just provisions in the bill that would cater to the needs of Catholics in England.

In a separate decision, the managers resolved to give preference to candidates who are both capable of and willing to teach the Irish language in the future appointments of teachers. This move demonstrates a broader commitment to the preservation and promotion of the Irish language within educational settings.

The widespread discontent and fervent calls for improvement underline the gravity of the situation surrounding the Education Bill. Stakeholders from different quarters are pushing for meaningful amendments and enhanced provisions to address the concerns of various communities and groups affected by the bill’s implications.
