Limerick Technical Committee Discusses School Grants and Financial Condition

The biweekly session of the Limerick Technical Committee took place yesterday under the chairmanship of Rev. A. Mulkrny, Adm, St. John’s. In attendance were various committee members including Miss Doyle, Rev. Brother Nolan, the City High Sheriff, Messrs M. Leahy, W. B. Joyce, R. P. O’Connor, along with Mr Comerton, Principal, and Mr F. C. McNamara, Assistant Secretary.

Teacher’s Substitute and Leave Approval

The meeting commenced with a discussion regarding Miss Murphy, a cookery teacher, who had been granted a fortnight’s leave at the previous meeting. Miss Murphy’s letter, accompanied by a doctor’s certificate, requested an additional fortnight’s leave. An issue emerged regarding the payment of her substitute. Mr Joyce suggested that such arrangements were usually made privately between the teachers. After deliberation, it was decided, upon the proposal of Mr Leahy and seconded by Mr O’Connor, that the substitute should indeed receive compensation.

Inquiry into the Department and a Response

The committee reviewed a copy of the warrant outlining an inquiry into the operations of the Department in Ireland. A corresponding letter sought suggestions from the committee on this matter. Miss Doyle believed that a response should be drafted. The Chairman concurred with the idea, but proposed that this be addressed in a special meeting. The present members were designated as a committee to formulate the response, though Mr O’Connor expressed his skepticism about the potential effectiveness of the inquiry.

The Limerick Technical Committee’s session delved into these crucial matters, underscoring the significance of administrative decisions on teachers’ leave, compensation, and the forthcoming interaction with the inquiry regarding the Department’s workings in Ireland.
