The Central Council of the Irish Land and Labour Association convened a special meeting in Mallow on Saturday to discuss amendments to the Labourers’ Bill and consider suggestions from various branches. The Council had already published amendments that were adopted by some members of the Irish Party. Due to this, it was decided not to publish the latest amendments discussed at the meeting but to present them to the official delegation working with Mr D. D. Sheehan, MP.., and other representatives of Ireland, who have the confidence of the Association.
During the meeting, resolutions were passed requesting Mr W. O’Brien, MP.., to forward additional points for amendment, following the lines of his Macroom speech. The Council also protested against the exclusion of Mr Sheehan from the Committees on the Bill.
The Council addressed the action of those who had summoned a Convention of branches in Limerick, Clare, and Tipperary for the following Friday in Limerick. They advised that this convention was not summoned in accordance with the old or revised rules.
Several new branches were announced as having affiliated with the Association, and subscriptions were collected to send a special delegation to Parliament to monitor the Bill’s progress through the Committee.
Among the attendees were individuals such as Edwards Fitzgerald, solicitor, Co.C., Chairman of Mallow U.D.C.; J. T. McQuinn from Balracelligott (Co. Kerry); W. N. Barry from Newmarket (Co. Cork); Cornelius Buckley from R.D.C., Cork; Jeremiah Egan from Dromecollagher (West Limerick); and Cornelius Buckley, Central Secretary, Blarney.
