During a meeting of the Limerick No. 1 District Council held on Saturday, Mr J. H. Ryan, J.P., Chairman, presiding, Mr P. Molloy attended to make a request. He asked the Council to send representatives to the Town Tenants’ Association Convention, scheduled to take place in Dublin on the 30th of this month. The request was met with unanimous agreement from the assembled members.
Mr Molloy, serving as the secretary to the local branch of the association, emphasized the pressing need to address the issue of town tenants. He highlighted the exorbitant rents prevailing in the city and the deplorable state of housing for its residents. He described the housing conditions as scandalous, asserting that it was difficult to believe the extent of the problem without witnessing it firsthand.
He implored the Council to visit the affected areas, where they would find people living in cramped conditions, with often three to seven individuals residing in a single room. He expressed his disbelief at how these individuals managed to survive in such dire circumstances. Many of these residents were living in hovels and inadequate accommodations.
In response to Mr Molloy’s appeal, the Chairman and other members of the Council pledged their full support to the cause. They assured Mr Molloy that they would send representatives to the Town Tenants’ Association Convention, demonstrating their commitment to addressing the pressing housing issues affecting the city’s residents.
Mr Molloy expressed his gratitude to the Council for their support and then withdrew from the meeting.
