Investigation into Unresolved Loans under Labourers’ (Ireland) Acts

In a recent parliamentary interaction, Mr O’Shaughnessy directed a question to the Chancellor of the Exchequer concerning lingering concerns surrounding loans granted under the Labourers’ (Ireland) Acts. Specifically, he sought clarification on whether the proposed clause within the Public Works Loans Bill would exclusively pertain to loans extended to farmers in Ireland for the construction of hay-sheds and if it would carry retrospective implications.

In response, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Arbuth, firmly stated that the proposed clause would not have a broad application. He emphasized its specificity to loans allocated for the building of hay-sheds by Irish farmers. Furthermore, Mr Arbuth clarified that there were no intentions to retrospectively affect other outstanding loans, underlining the unique circumstances associated with the Labourers’ Act loans. His response indicated a commitment to maintaining the existing conditions of other outstanding loans, thus preserving the current state of affairs.
