Unveiling the Father Casey Monument in Abbeyfeale

In a momentous occasion that adds another layer to the rich tapestry of Ireland’s national monuments, the unveiling of the Father Casey Monument in Abbeyfeale took centre stage. The monument, strategically positioned in the Market Square of Abbeyfeale, now stands as a symbol of reverence and remembrance for the late Reverend William Casey, a pivotal figure in the community.

The monument, a meticulously crafted tribute to the esteemed pastor, is a sight to behold. Enclosed within an artistically designed ornamental spiked railing made of grey granite, it commands attention and respect. The base, also constructed from grey granite, features four panels inscribed in gilt embossing, detailing significant milestones in Father Casey’s life – from his birth to his ordination, appointments, and beyond.

The central column, a magnificent block of polished red granite, supports four oval bronze plaques bearing eloquent dedications. One of these tributes, presented by grateful fellow-countrymen from near and far, encapsulates the essence of Father Casey’s legacy. The inscription pays homage to a man who, for a quarter of a century, served as the parish priest, guiding his people from the shackles of landlordism to becoming landowners and freemen.

A prominent member of the Munster Bar articulated the sentiments behind the monument, stating, “By religion, he was a shining light; in the cause of Temperance, a strenuous advocate; to the poor, irrespective of creed, a friend; and to Ireland, a devoted son. His memory, a rich, ennobling, and inspiring inheritance, will endure forever in the hearts of the people.”

On the opposite panel, a Gaelic translation of the dedication stands as a testament to the deep cultural roots embedded in the community. Additionally, a finely executed bronze cast from a photograph by Mr R. Gibson, a photographic artist from Limerick, adorns one of the remaining panels, capturing the essence of the old ruins in the Abbey Cemetery.

The monument’s capital features four bronze shields adorned with sacred designs, symbolizing the unwavering faith that Father Casey embodied throughout his life. Atop the capital stands a remarkable bronze figure of the late pastor, standing at an impressive 7 feet 6 inches. In a poignant pose, a breviary is held in the left hand close to the side, while the right is upraised in gentle exhortation. The statue faces in a south-easterly direction, easily visible from the Kerry and Limerick roads leading to the square.

Standing approximately 20 feet from the base, the Father Casey Monument is poised to become a focal point for locals and visitors alike. To enhance its visibility even further, plans are underway to install the Pictor lighting system within the coming weeks. The subcommittee responsible for the monument is diligently working on arrangements for the official unveiling, though the precise date remains to be confirmed, with expectations set for at least a fortnight before the event.

As the community eagerly anticipates this landmark occasion, the Father Casey Monument stands not just as a physical structure but as a powerful symbol of the enduring legacy of a man who dedicated his life to the welfare and upliftment of his people. Abbeyfeale, with its new addition, reinforces the significance of preserving the memories of those who have left an indelible mark on the collective soul of a community and a nation.
