Inauguration of Magnificent Organ at Dominican Church, Limerick

Limerick, Sunday. The Dominican Church in Limerick witnessed a momentous occasion as the newly installed organ was inaugurated today amidst a solemn and impressive service. The instrument, a magnificent creation with beautiful tonal qualities, was crafted by the skilled hands of Messrs. Evens and Barr from Belfast. This organ not only stands as a testament to native workmanship but also adds a charming auditory dimension to the sacred space, as evident from the enchanting effect it produced during its inaugural service.

The opening ceremony commenced at 10 o’clock with a High Mass, presided over by the Most Rev. Dr O’Dwyer, who donned full canonicals for the occasion. The officiating clergy included the Rev. Fathers O’Kane, Falvey, and Nolan, playing the roles of celebrant, deacon, and sub-deacon, respectively. The Prior, Rev. Father Powell, extended a warm invitation to the Mayor, who attended with his mace-bearers, and members of the Corporation, along with several prominent citizens, forming a sizable congregation.

The musical accompaniment for the day was provided by the church choir under the direction of Mr Henri Gas, the organist. The choir rendered a Mass composed by Bartholomew’s in honour of St. Servetus, the Protector of the Dominican Order, filling the sacred space with harmonious melodies that resonated with the spirit of the occasion.

In the evening, at seven o’clock, the Very Rev. Father O’Kane, Provincial from Dublin, delivered a sermon to a large and attentive congregation. The new organ, with its inaugural performance, not only added a musical flourish to the Dominican Church but also marked a significant cultural and artistic contribution to the community. The occasion celebrated both the craftsmanship of Messrs. Evens and Barr and the spiritual significance of the Dominican Church in Limerick. The resonance of the newly inaugurated organ will undoubtedly continue to enhance the spiritual experiences of those who gather within the hallowed walls of the church.
