A sombre event unfolded near Limerick last evening, as a tragic drowning accident claimed the life of Edward O’Sullivan, an 18-year-old student hailing from Tournafulla near Abbeyfeale. The incident occurred in Corbally, casting a pall of grief over the community.
Edward, a student at the Redemptorist College, was partaking in a bathing excursion with fellow students in the waters of the Shannon. Unfortunately, what began as a leisurely activity turned into a devastating event when Edward was observed encountering difficulty in the water. Despite the swift response of onlookers, he succumbed to the water before assistance could reach him.
Michael, one of the individuals present, courageously dived in and retrieved Edward’s lifeless body. Despite valiant attempts at resuscitation, their efforts proved futile. The young student’s remains were subsequently transported to Mount St. Alphonsus, where the weight of the tragedy hangs heavy.
An inquest into the circumstances surrounding the drowning is expected to be conducted, shedding light on the sequence of events leading to this heart-wrenching loss. The entire community, along with the Redemptorist College, mourns the untimely passing of Edward O’Sullivan, remembering him as a promising young student whose life was tragically cut short.
