Limerick gears up for a grand spectacle as the National Volunteers prepare for their upcoming grand review, set to take place next Sunday. With an estimated 20,000 volunteers expected to participate, anticipation is running high for this significant event.
Reports flooding in from various corps across the region suggest a substantial turnout for the review, which will be graced by the presence of esteemed figures such as Mr John Redmond, M.R, and Colonel Moore, C. 8. The use of Greenpark has been generously granted to the Company, setting the stage for a memorable march past in front of the grandstand.
One of the highlights of the event will be the presentation of new colours to the Limerick City Regiment, courtesy of the Limerick National Volunteers’ Association. Taking advantage of Mr Redmond’s attendance, organisers plan to make the presentation during the festivities.
Following the review, a grand demonstration is scheduled to take place at another section of the racecourse, situated just half a mile from the city boundary. The Mayor of Limerick, known for their staunch Nationalist stance, will preside over the proceedings. Mr Redmond is expected to deliver the principal address, accompanied by speeches from Right Rev. Mgr. Arthur Canon Ryan and other prominent clergymen, as well as several Members of Parliament.
Notable attendees include Captain Donolan, MP.., Messrs. W. Redmond, John P. Boland, and John Hackett, among others. The trades of the city, strong supporters of Mr Redmond and the Irish Party, will also be well-represented, adding to the vibrancy of the gathering with their participation.
A letter from Rev. J. A. O’Connor of St. Michael’s, Limerick, highlights the enthusiasm surrounding the event, with priests expressing their interest in attending. Reverend O’Connor, while supportive of the Nationalist cause, emphasises the importance of maintaining a neutral stance regarding individual decisions to enlist in the English army.
Further details regarding train arrangements for attendees from various districts in Munster are expected to be published during the week, ensuring smooth logistics for participants arriving via the Great Southern and Western Railway Co.
As preparations continue to unfold, the grand review promises to be a momentous occasion, uniting volunteers and supporters in a celebration of camaraderie and Nationalist fervour.
