Privates Danaher, Squirm, Bowman, Lynch, and Whelan of the Munster Fusiliers, hailing from Limerick, have shared a stirring account of the valour displayed by Father Gleeson during the German bombardment on May 11th.
In a poignant letter, the men vividly describe the harrowing scenes they witnessed during the attack, with buildings, chapels, trees, and bodies engulfed in flames and chaos. Despite the overwhelming danger, Father Gleeson remained steadfast in his duty, courageously tending to the wounded amidst the hail of gunfire and exploding shells.
“It was terrible,” the letter reads, “but Father Gleeson stuck to his post, attending to the wounded and undaunted by the relentless barrage of stern and shell dropping all around him.”
The bravery and selflessness exhibited by Father Gleeson have left a profound impression on the Limerick men, prompting them to declare that if anyone is deserving of the Victoria Cross, it is Father Gleason.
This testament to Father Gleeson’s heroism serves as a reminder of the extraordinary courage and compassion that can emerge amidst the darkest of times.
