Winter Assizes: Limerick Poised for Hosting

There is now a strong case for holding the Winter Assizes in Limerick. The availability and qualifications of jurors for impartial investigations are widely acknowledged as satisfactory. Furthermore, the city offers ample hotel accommodations for lawyers and witnesses, while excellent railway facilities connect Limerick with all parts of Munster. The judges in the past two Assizes have expressed their support for granting Limerick its turn, in line with the Grand Jury’s recommendation. There is every indication that this desire will be fulfilled. Beyond practical considerations, the longstanding stigma of mistrusting Limerick jurors can finally be dispelled. Notably, Cork’s newspapers have voiced no objection to this change, signalling a positive response.
