County Limerick Evicted Tenants’ Association

A meeting of the County Limerick Evicted Tenants’ Association took place in the Town Hall, with Mr P. Bourke, B.A., presiding. The meeting was attended by various members of the association.

The following resolutions were presented, seconded, and unanimously passed:

  1. The evicted tenants who have been left without land for three years, despite the Land Act being in effect and a significant portion of Ireland’s land being sold, are victims of a national outrage for which both landlords and the Government are responsible. The failure to reinstate them is unjust, and the Government’s lack of administration of the law is a betrayal.
  2. Evicted tenants are among the most vulnerable groups, and any disruption of national unity would disproportionately affect them. A conference is suggested to be held between representative figures in Cork and Limerick to find common ground, apply pressure to relevant parties, and reach an understanding before the National Convention to prevent dissension.
  3. While supporting the idea of holding public meetings to aid the cause of evicted tenants, it is stressed that such meetings should focus on the tenants’ cases without fostering controversies among fellow Irishmen.
  4. The evicted tenants express their strong desire for the leaders of the Irish movement to resolve their differences promptly, as this is seen as crucial for the speedy reinstatement of those who suffered in the land war.
  5. The case of the Goold-Verschoyle tenants in Athea is brought up, with concern that they signed purchase papers regardless of the evicted tenants’ plight and against public opinion. The Estates Commissioners are urged to find an equivalent solution for Mr John H. Danaher’s farms.

Additionally, resolutions of gratitude were passed to Mr Heskell from Waterford for his efforts on behalf of the evicted tenants, admiration was expressed for Mr John O’Donnell’s actions, and condemnation was directed towards those who supported land grabbers.

This meeting highlights the association’s strong commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of evicted tenants, expressing concerns about the state of affairs and calling for unity and action to address the ongoing issues.
