Emerald Archives presents Limerick’s Articles as more than a military surrender: they transformed defeat into a legal settlement linking allegiance, property, worship and mobility. Particularly striking is the uncertainty created by the omitted wording in the civil articles, which shows how a single textual difference could affect Catholic landowners and communities seeking protection. The article also resists treating 1691 as an inevitable beginning of later exclusions, emphasising choices still open to soldiers, civilians and officials. How should we interpret the Articles’ significance: chiefly as a wartime compromise, a missed foundation for broader toleration, or a mechanism whose enforcement shaped Ireland?
