There is a basic chronological caution before any account of 1751. Under the old legal system used in Ireland as in England and Wales, the civil year had conventionally begun on 25 March, Lady Day, even though many people treated 1 January as New Year in ordinary usage. The Calendar (New Style) Act, passed at Westminster in 1750, ordered that from 1 January 1752 the legal year would begin on that date. It also prepared the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in September 1752, when eleven nominal dates would be omitted.
