Abstract

At 31,834 BCE, Ireland cannot be described through annual history because evidence consists of geological and palaeontological records rather than written or archaeological chronologies. During Marine Isotope Stage 3, an unevenly growing British–Irish Ice Sheet alternated with areas of open, cold tundra. Derryvree silts, later buried by ice, preserve pollen, mosses and fauna indicating periglacial conditions, while Castlepook Cave records mammals including mammoth, reindeer, giant deer, predators and lemmings across a period. No secure evidence establishes human settlement, institutions or culture. A possibly cut-marked reindeer bone suggests an unconfirmed transient visit. These fragments reveal an Ice Age environment before maximum.
