Power and Frontiers

The most important change within the Angevin administration was the temporary removal of Hugh de Lacy. Lord of Meath and custodian of Dublin, de Lacy was the crown’s most powerful representative in Ireland. He had distributed estates among followers, planted strongpoints across Meath and developed relationships with Gaelic rulers. These activities helped stabilise the colony, but also made him formidable enough to alarm Henry II.
