The Chief Secretary’s response in the House of Commons regarding the alleged persecution of Dr Long in Limerick was unsatisfactory. While promising protection, the Chief Secretary expressed disapproval of Dr Long’s work and did not condemn the actions of the Resident Magistrate. Concerning boycotting cases in Limerick, the Chief Secretary promised to fulfill his duty, but it remains uncertain whether he fully understands the seriousness of the situation in Limerick where the United Irish League holds power. Unionist members maintained a friendly tone towards the Chief Secretary, but his stance on Roman Catholic intolerance in Limerick remains disappointing.
