Limerick, June 22, 2023 – The Limerick Fishery Conservators convened yesterday under the chairmanship of Lord Massey, and it was revealed that the current salmon run in the Shannon tributaries is the most abundant in recent years. However, concerns were raised regarding the lack of funds to adequately protect these valuable fisheries. Anthony Mackey, a prominent member of the conservators, stated that the salmon population held a staggering value of £100,000.
Recognizing the urgent need for action, the conservators unanimously agreed to seek financial assistance from both the County Council and the government. The aim is to secure the necessary resources to preserve and safeguard the thriving salmon population for future generations.
With the funds sought, the conservators intend to implement measures that will ensure the sustained conservation of the salmon fisheries. These may include improved monitoring systems, enhanced enforcement against illegal fishing practices, and investment in research and educational initiatives to promote responsible fishing practices.
The salmon run in the Shannon tributaries is not only a vital ecological resource but also a significant economic asset for the region. The conservators are hopeful that the County Council and the government will recognize the importance of preserving this natural heritage and provide the financial aid required to protect the salmon fisheries effectively.
As the request for financial assistance is made, the conservators remain committed to their mission of safeguarding the salmon population and ensuring the long-term viability of this cherished natural resource in the Shannon.
