We Catholics Must Save St. Patrick’s Well At Singland

Dear Sir,

As someone who holds great hope for the success of the upcoming demonstration in our city to honour St. Patrick, the illustrious Patron of Ireland, I would like to mention another way in which we can honour the saint. The beautiful well dedicated to St. Patrick at Singland has not been maintained in the clean and respectable condition that we, as Catholics, would desire. The images on its altar are damaged and unrecognizable, and the tree hanging over the well is in a dangerous condition after the recent storm. Some time ago, I noticed in the local papers that a committee was appointed to collect funds to restore the well and its surroundings, but for some reason, the project seems to have fallen through. The place is deteriorating day by day, with animals freely roaming about, and it is a disgrace to us Catholics to allow this to continue.

Now, here’s my suggestion, which I believe will receive the approval of our fellow citizens. I propose that the executive committee in charge of the demonstration on Thursday should procure collection boxes and approach each marching contingent to collect money towards renovating Limerick’s historic keepsake of St. Patrick. It is believed that our illustrious saint stood on that very spot and blessed the people of the West. By taking on this project, the executive committee will be honouring our National Apostle and bringing great blessings to the people of our city. Many individuals in Limerick and beyond have reason to be grateful for this holy well, as it has been the site of numerous miracles. The least they could do now to show their gratitude is to generously subscribe and restore the well and its surroundings, creating a lasting monument to the great national movement initiated in Ireland by the Limerick branch of the Gaelic League.

In anticipation of your kind consideration and publication of these few lines, I remain,

Yours truly,
Seatain O’Riain
