Poor Law Conference to Discuss Union Amalgamation

A conference to address the topic of union amalgamation will convene tomorrow, Wednesday, around noon at the County Courthouse. In relation to this matter, Lord Monteagle sent a letter to Mr R. Roche, Secretary to the County Council, expressing his thoughts on the issue. The letter, received on Saturday, reads as follows:

“Foynes, April 9th, 1904.

Dear Sir,

I have been considering the upcoming conference of delegates from the Boards of Guardians in the county regarding Poor Law Reform, which your Council intends to host. It occurred to me that the conference would gain significant interest and influence if it encompassed a broader scope, such as North Munster. The Irish Workhouse Association, of which I am the President, would be delighted to assist in organizing such an expanded conference and contribute towards any additional expenses it may entail. Last autumn, our Association successfully organized a similar conference in Kilkenny for South Leinster, which was widely acknowledged as having played a significant role in raising public awareness about this important issue.

I kindly request that you ascertain the views of your Committee on this subject and, if they approve, authorize you and the chairman, or any other appropriate individual designated by them, to coordinate the details with me. It goes without saying that it would be a labour of love for me to contribute to organizing this event in my own province, working in collabouration with numerous former colleagues on the Council, etc.

Yours faithfully,

Monteagle.

R. Roche, Esq.
