The upcoming departure of Mr Michael Prendergast, B.C., and his family for New York has elicited a sense of regret not only among his colleagues in the Corporation but also among the Nationalist and Democratic elements of his native city. Mr Prendergast, known for his broad-mindedness, kindness, and geniality, exemplifies the qualities of a good citizen, regardless of location. Limerick will keenly feel the loss of his services to the community. Mr Prendergast has long been a dedicated Nationalist, following in the footsteps of Mitchell, Maher, and Davis. His colleagues recognize him as a conscientious and pure-minded patriot. In the Mechanics’ Institute, he played a prominent role among the working class, often mediating trade disputes to achieve peaceful and honourable resolutions. As the former General Secretary of the Irish Federal Union of Bakers, Mr Prendergast earned the admiration and respect of trade members throughout Ireland. Today, he received an address and a purse of sovereigns from his fellow Borough Council members, and tonight, he will be honoured with a similar presentation from his Nationalist friends. They all wish him success and prosperity in the land of his adoption, the greater Ireland beyond the seas.
