Land Purchase in Limerick: Tenants Negotiate with General Bateson

A meeting of tenants on the property of General Bateson, located at Longhill and other areas in West Limerick, recently took place to discuss the terms of land purchase under the Land Purchase Act of 1903. Mr Jameson Jr., the agent at Foynes, represented the owner and conveyed the offer to the tenants.

According to Mr Jameson, General Bateson was willing to sell the land with a discount of 6s 6d in the £ (pound) or at a rate of 20 years’ purchase for first-term tenants. After deliberation, the tenants expressed their willingness to purchase the land at a rate of 19.5 years, equivalent to a discount of 78.5d in the £. It was agreed that all game and other rights would be reserved for the tenants as part of the purchase agreement.

This negotiation represents an important step in the process of land ownership transfer, allowing tenants the opportunity to become landowners themselves under the provisions of the Land Purchase Act.
