Brutal Attack on United Irish League Abbeyfeale Branch Member

At the meeting of the Abbeyfeale branch of the United Irish League, presided by Reverend Father Cusey, P.P., a serious incident was reported. Mr Robert Williams Wynne, a wealthy gentleman residing in a remote area of Gartbewin County, was the victim of a brutal attack. Timothy Swift, a labourer from Limerick, was found guilty of assaulting Mr Wynne, robbing him, and causing him harm.

The assault occurred on the evening of December 27th when Mr Wynne was suddenly attacked in one of his outbuildings by Swift, who knocked him to the ground, bound him, and stole from him. Swift’s defence, in which he claimed to have been entertained by Mr Wynne, was dismissed by the jury.

In light of this incident, the United Irish League members expressed indignation and condemned the attack. The Chairman assured that the victim would be protected, and they would take necessary steps to ensure justice.

During the meeting, other matters were discussed, including issues related to labourers in the area. There were complaints about the eviction of labourers from additional half acres of land and the need for a resolution to reduce their rent until they obtain those plots. Concerns were raised about the lack of understanding from land valuers or arbitrators in some cases, resulting in discrepancies in land compensation.

Additionally, the meeting discussed the plight of evicted tenants and the proposal for the Irish Party to introduce a clause in the Land Act, 1903 Amendment Bill. The clause would grant the Estates Commissioners the power to allocate plots of waste and unoccupied land to young labourers intending to settle in those areas. This measure was considered as a way to address land distribution and settlement issues in the region.

The meeting also addressed the supplemental water scheme and raised funds for its implementation. The discussion was adjourned, focusing on raising money for the scheme.
