Father Casey presided over a well-attended meeting of the Abbeyfeale branch of the United Irish League on Sunday, where he shared his views on the upcoming nominations for County and District Councillors. The Chairman expressed that he wouldn’t intervene in their selections but urged them to choose candidates of integrity—honest, capable individuals who are neither rogues nor fools. He humorously stated that while it might not be a moral principle to follow, he would prefer a rogue over a fool, as a rogue might occasionally perform a good deed, whereas a fool might not be capable of doing so.
Regarding the County Councillorship, Father Casey mentioned that Mr Collins had indicated he wouldn’t seek re-election. He acknowledged Mr Collins’ service and noted that, though some reasons might lead him not to run again, if a delegation were to approach him, they could potentially persuade him to reconsider.
A vote of thanks was given to Mr Collins for his representation on the Limerick County Council over the past six years. In a subsequent event, the Abbeyfeale brass band and a delegation from the town and surrounding area visited Mr Bartholomew C. Collins at his residence to encourage him to reconsider his decision to retire from his role as the division’s representative on the Limerick County Council. The deputation was led by Reverend Father Casey, and Mr Collins expressed his gratitude for the gesture. He initially stated his intention to step down was firm, regardless of financial incentives, but ultimately, moved by the appeal, he agreed to once again take up the position he had previously held with honour and popularity for six years. The heartfelt appeal led to a resounding cheer from the attendees.
