The recent annual meeting of the Governors of Barrington’s Hospital held at the Chamber of Commerce yielded important insights into the institution’s current state. Chaired by the Mayor, the meeting was attended by prominent figures such as Sir Charles B Barrington, the Very Reverend Dean O’Brien, Rev. D.R. Shanahan, and more. The meeting addressed concerns surrounding the hospital’s finances and its ongoing mission.
The annual report, presented by Sir Charles Barrington, acknowledged the exemplary nursing and overall management of the hospital, attributed to Matron Miss Coffey. The report disclosed that during the past year, the hospital had accommodated 631 internal cases and treated 3,480 accident cases in the external department. The financial outlook, however, indicated that the institution was still grappling with a debt of £600, with a total debt, including old balances, amounting to £2,472. The report extended gratitude to the Corporation of Limerick for their continued grant and acknowledged the support of the surgical, medical, and dental staff, as well as the local press.
A significant contribution to the hospital’s finances was the successful fete, “Garryowen II,” which attracted between eighteen and nineteen thousand attendees and garnered immense support from the community. The report indicated a rise in income from paying patients and the “out-pursing” department.
The meeting, after acknowledging the efforts of the fete organizers, proceeded to elect a new Management Committee, which includes individuals like Dr Holmes, Mr A.W. Shaw, Dr W.A. Fogerty, Alderman McNeice, and more. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the Mayor and the fete organizers, highlighting the strong community support that Barrington’s Hospital continues to receive.
