St. John’s Cathedral was the scene of a solemn ceremony on Saturday, marking the anniversary of the passing of the Most Reverend Dr Butler, the former Bishop of Limerick. The occasion saw the offering of a High Mass in honour of the departed prelate’s soul. Reverend Michael Murphy of St. John’s served as the celebrant, with Reverend S. Connolly as deacon and Reverend J. Casey as sub-deacon. Reverend J. McNamara acted as the Master of Ceremonies, while the chanters were Reverend J. O’Hea from Kilmallock and Reverend Robert Fitzgerald from St. John’s.
Among the clergy present in the choir were Very Reverend Dean Shanahan of Thomondgate, Very Reverend M. Donor of Shannongolden, Reverend M. Browne and Reverend M. Carroll, both rectors of different churches, as well as various other reverends representing different parishes. The presiding figure of the ceremony was the Bishop himself, Most Reverend Dr O’Dwyer.
