Proposed Appointment of Mr Alexander W. Shaw to Canal Commission

To the Editor of the Limerick Echo:

Dear Sir,

With reference to the recent official announcement concerning the forthcoming Canals Commission, tasked with examining matters related to the waterways of Ireland, I wish to draw attention to a potential candidate for the role of representative of Irish business interests on this commission.

If a selection for this representative position has not already been made, I wholeheartedly suggest that Mr Alexander W. Shaw, a highly esteemed member of our community, would be an exceptional and fitting choice. As a representative of a long-standing, successful mercantile firm, Mr Shaw brings with him a wealth of experience in business affairs. His broad-mindedness, liberal views, and enlightened outlook, combined with his profound understanding of business dynamics, make him eminently suited for such a responsibility. Moreover, his commitment to the utilization and development of Ireland’s waterways, as demonstrated by his writings and public statements on the matter, further enhances his qualifications.

Mr Shaw’s dedication to the importance of waterway utilization and his grasp of the intricate canal systems abroad, notably in Belgium, render him a highly suitable candidate for this commission. His involvement in the commission’s proceedings could have far-reaching and beneficial consequences for our country. His expertise and insights, derived from extensive consideration and study of the subject, would be of immense value.

It cannot be overstated how valuable it would be for Ireland to reduce its dependency on railways and railway rates, instead capitalizing on its waterways for the transportation of goods and commodities. Mr Shaw’s knowledge and business acumen would contribute significantly to these efforts. As we contemplate the potential of this commission and its potential outcomes, it becomes evident that someone like Mr Shaw, possessing an ideal blend of experience and vision, should be part of its deliberations.

I write to you in the hope that this matter reaches the attention of various local public boards and representative bodies. These include the Municipal Council, the Chamber of Commerce, the Harbor Board, and the Mechanics’ Institute, among others. It is my belief that these entities should collectively strive to secure the appointment of Mr Shaw. Limerick, closely linked to numerous pivotal centres through the Grand Canal, stands to gain greatly from his inclusion in this commission.

With our City Representative at the forefront, supported by the Irish Party if necessary, and buoyed by local opinion voiced through the Press and our representative bodies, the appointment of Mr Shaw, who would undoubtedly be well-received by the current Government, could become a reality. Prompt action is vital if we are to achieve this desirable outcome.

Yours faithfully,

Canals Commission.
