Abstract

Although 31,751 BCE cannot identify a recoverable Irish year, it corresponds approximately to MIS 3, a climatically unstable Late Pleistocene interval before major glaciation. Environmental archives indicate changing, partly ice-free landscapes, altered coastlines and uncertain connections with Britain. Derryvree, County Fermanagh, preserves freshwater deposits showing cold, treeless tundra vegetation, wetlands and brief productive seasons. Castlepook Cave, County Cork, records diverse cold-adapted fauna, including reindeer, mammoth, giant deer, predators and lemmings, across a long timespan. A possibly cut-marked reindeer bone may suggest fleeting human activity, but proves neither settlement nor society. Later ice and poor preservation limit conclusions about Ireland’s inhabitants.
