Sigginstown’s cessation is striking because it functioned less as peace than as a redistribution of time, resources and political opportunity. While it relieved pressure on Dublin and enabled Confederate diplomacy and northern planning, it excluded Monro’s Covenanting army and left religion, landownership and constitutional authority unsettled. The article therefore suggests that an armistice can intensify conflict in political forms even as it curbs campaigns. Comparing the agreement’s financial payments, territorial provisions and safe-conduct diplomacy, how far should we view the cessation as a pragmatic military pause, and how far as a turning point that strengthened Confederate claims to political authority?
