Shan Van Vocht Launches

One firmly dated cultural development of 1896 was the launch in Belfast of Shan Van Vocht, a monthly journal edited by Alice Milligan and Anna Johnston, who wrote as Ethna Carbery. Its title invoked the personification of Ireland familiar from eighteenth- and nineteenth-century nationalist song and verse. The journal was born after the women’s removal from the Northern Patriot, but it rapidly created a wider platform for literature, history, folklore, political commentary and appeals to national feeling.
