Clontarf And Aftermath

Ireland in 1014 was not a unified state in the later sense. Kingship worked through layered authority: local rulers owed service to provincial overkings, and the high-king or overking of Ireland relied on hostages, tribute, marriage alliances and military pressure rather than permanent administration. Brian Bórama, better known as Brian Boru, had risen from the Dál Cais power base in Thomond and Munster to displace Máel Sechnaill mac Domnaill, king of Mide and Tara, as the dominant ruler in Ireland. His authority was real, but it depended on continuing submission by other kings.
