Derryvree’s Fossil Milfoil
Archived: 6 October 2026
30,195 BCE is not a recoverable Irish historical year, but falls within MIS 3, a climatically unstable Late Pleistocene period. Derryvree, County Fermanagh, preserves freshwater organic sediments between glacial tills, indicating a local ice-free wetland with cold, treeless tundra vegetation, rather than island-wide conditions. Castlepook Cave's mixed fauna records reindeer, mammoth, giant deer and predators across extended periods, not one contemporaneous community. A cut-marked reindeer femur may indicate Upper Palaeolithic human carcass processing, but cannot demonstrate settlement. Ireland was undergoing changing pre-maximum glacial conditions; evidence supports ecological reconstruction, while political, cultural and precise chronological narratives remain unknowable in historical detail.
