Abstract

Around 32,000 calibrated years before present, Ireland was entering a severe glacial phase during unstable North Atlantic climatic conditions. Expanding sectors of the British–Irish Ice Sheet increasingly reshaped habitats, coastlines and landscapes, although ice advance varied regionally. Cave remains at Castlepook, County Cork, demonstrate an Ice Age fauna including reindeer, mammoth, hyaena and lemmings, indicating cold, open environments. A possibly cut-marked reindeer bone offers tentative evidence of human activity around 33,000 years ago, but cannot prove settlement, culture or continuity. Glacial erosion and later sea-level rise destroyed much evidence. Ireland’s history at this date remains indirect, fragmentary and necessarily uncertain.
