Abstract

Around 30,264 BCE, Ireland lay within cold conditions of Marine Isotope Stage 3, near the expansion of the British–Irish Ice Sheet. Evidence cannot support annual events or named societies. At Derryvree, County Fermanagh, organic freshwater sediments between glacial tills record an ice-free interval with wetlands, sedges, mosses and cold-adapted insects, though dates remain broad and local. Other Fermanagh deposits indicate similar non-glacial habitats. Castlepook Cave fauna demonstrate intermittent presence of mammoths, reindeer and predators, but not a contemporary ecosystem. A marked reindeer bone may indicate human butchery, yet remains uncorroborated. Environmental change, advancing ice and fragmentary evidence define the period.
