30,488 BCE cannot be reconstructed as a discrete Irish historical year, but falls within a Late Pleistocene interval documented by broad dating ranges. At Derryvree, County Fermanagh, freshwater silts sealed between glacial tills record an interstadial wetland of treeless tundra, Arctic-alpine plants, insects and seasonal water, demonstrating local ice-free conditions. Castlepook Cave, County Cork, preserves a complex fauna including mammoth, reindeer, giant deer, bears, hyaenas, wolves, Arctic foxes, hares and lemmings, showing ecological links with north-west Europe. A possibly cut-marked reindeer bone suggests fleeting human activity, not settlement. Subsequent glaciation overwhelmed the landscape; sources reveal no polities, culture or economy.
