The Atlantic Tundra Margin
Archived: 23 September 2026
Thirty thousand seven hundred and ninety-three BCE is not a recoverable Irish year but falls within unstable Marine Isotope Stage 3. Derryvree, County Fermanagh, preserves freshwater organic deposits between glacial tills, indicating a temporary ice-free tundra landscape with pools, sedges, mosses and sparse vegetation. Calibration supports only a broad chronological range. Cave deposits at Castlepook, County Cork, show cold-adapted fauna including reindeer, mammoth and hyaena, though not contemporaneous communities. A marked reindeer bone may indicate Upper Palaeolithic butchery, yet permanent human settlement remains unproven. Ireland was a regionally varied, precarious Atlantic environment before the British-Irish Ice Sheet's later maximum advance.
