Castlepook’s Unsettled Femur
Archived: 20 September 2026
31,021 BCE is not a recoverable Irish year but falls within the fluctuating Marine Isotope Stage 3 of the last ice age. Ireland contained ice-free, periglacial and freshwater environments before the later Last Glacial Maximum. Derryvree, County Fermanagh, preserves organic sediments dated broadly across this period, indicating cold open wetland vegetation, insects and water between glacial advances. Castlepook Cave, County Cork, records diverse fauna, including reindeer, mammoth and predators. A marked reindeer femur may indicate human butchery, but remains unconfirmed. No dated settlement, tools or social evidence exists. Glacial erosion has left a selective record, requiring cautious interpretation and research.
