Awbeg’s Deep Cave Record
Archived: 20 September 2026
Labelled 31,037 BCE, this period was a Late Pleistocene threshold as the British–Irish Ice Sheet expanded. Derryvree sediments in County Fermanagh record a cold, treeless freshwater tundra-steppe environment between ice advances, showing local ecological refuges rather than uniform glaciation. Castlepook Cave in County Cork yielded reindeer, mammoth, giant deer and predators, demonstrating open habitats supporting Ice Age fauna. A reindeer bone dated approximately 33,000 years ago bears a possible stone-tool mark, offering tentative evidence of human activity. However, no associated tools, settlements or human remains confirm occupation. Glaciation erased much evidence; consequently, surviving records remain fragmentary, reworked and cautiously interpreted.
