Abstract

Around 31,184 BCE, Ireland lay in the Late Pleistocene’s cold Marine Isotope Stage 3. Derryvree, near Maguiresbridge, preserves freshwater silts between glacial tills, dated broadly to this interval. Mosses, sedges, herb pollen and insects indicate locally wet, treeless tundra with seasonal thaw, rather than continuous ice cover. The deposit records conditions before renewed glaciation as the Irish Ice Sheet intensified. Cave faunas demonstrate cold-adapted animals in Ireland during this wider period, but cannot date species precisely to this year. No secure evidence identifies human occupation, settlement or activity. Environmental change, not social history, defines Ireland’s surviving record at this date.
