Abstract

31,217 BCE is a modern, imprecise label for a Late Pleistocene interval, not a documented Irish year. During unstable MIS 3, Ireland experienced increasingly extensive glaciation, though conditions varied locally. Derryvree, County Fermanagh, preserves freshwater organic deposits between tills, indicating an ice-free, cold, wet, treeless landscape sometime around 36,900–31,700 cal BP. Castlepook Cave, County Cork, contains a long, mixed assemblage of Ice Age fauna, including mammoth, reindeer and predators. A possibly stone-cut reindeer femur may indicate fleeting human activity, but remains unconfirmed. Available evidence securely establishes environmental change and animal presence, not settlement, society, religion, routes or specific annual events.
