Abstract

In 1121, Domnall Ua Lochlainn’s death ended the northern overking’s role as Connacht’s principal counterweight, strengthening his son-in-law Toirdelbach Ua Conchobair’s claim to wider supremacy. Toirdelbach invaded Munster, devastating territories, churches and Lismore’s protected lands, taking cattle and hostages, and attempting to balance Mac Cárthaigh and Uí Briain interests. His forces nevertheless suffered notable losses. Church politics saw Armagh’s Cellach temporarily assume Dublin’s bishopric amid reform and Canterbury connections. Regional feuds killed several rulers, including one at Bangor cemetery. Fires and storms damaged ecclesiastical settlements at Telach Inmainne and Armagh, revealing communities vulnerable to warfare, disaster, tribute and shifting lordship.
