Fire and Foray

The principal political event securely assigned to 1112 was a raid led by Domnall Ua Lochlainn across Fine Gall, the fertile coastal district north of Dublin. The Annals of Ulster say that he carried away a great herd of cattle and many prisoners. The Four Masters extend the expedition as far as a place called Droichet Dubgaill, or “the Foreigner’s Bridge”. Although its exact identification is uncertain, the detail suggests a substantial advance into the Dublin hinterland rather than a minor frontier incursion.
