Pynnar’s Walled Derry
Pynnar’s survey was firmly tied to 1619. Commissioned on 28 November 1618, he spent 119 days examining the progress of the plantation in the six escheated counties of Armagh, Cavan, Donegal, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Londonderry, completing his return on 28 March 1619. His task was not simply cartographic. He was to assess whether undertakers, servitors and selected native grantees had met the conditions attached to their estates: whether they had erected defensible houses and bawns, brought in British tenants, developed farms and mills, supplied arms, and established the settlements promised to the Crown.
