Abstract

During 1038, Ireland remained fragmented, with rival dynasties contesting kingship, territory and influence. Local violence reached ecclesiastical centres: Orc Allaid Ua Ruadacáin was killed at Armagh by Clann Sínaig; Delbna defeated Uí Maine at Clonmacnoise during Ciarán’s feast; and Conchobar Ua Máelshechlainn’s Gailenga plundered Clonard. Killings, imprisonment and succession disputes affected Mide, Munster, Donegal and Dublin, where Ímar replaced Echmarcach. Rathlin was raided by Norse or Hiberno-Norse forces. Church obituaries reveal institutional networks and pilgrimage to Rome. Annals also note abundant fruit while stressing chronological uncertainty. Sacred settlements, central to worship, learning and economic life, proved vulnerable to regional feuds.
