The Tragic Incident at Garryowen Quarry

A deeply unfortunate accident occurred at the disused quarry in Garryowen on Tuesday, resulting in the death of a destitute itinerant labourer. This incident has shed light on a troubling situation in this historic area, which was once a focal point of intense fighting during the siege of Limerick.

While a pensioner appointed by the Corporation was stationed at the quarry, he was unable to prevent the man from venturing into the perilous depths in search of means to sustain himself. Tragically, the treacherous conditions, with their malodorous slime and hidden hazards, claimed the man’s life. It is disheartening to note that a contemporary source, in its report, replaced the term “fetid mire” with “water.” This comical alteration, although perhaps well-intentioned, would defy scientific reality.

The stench emanating from the quarry is indeed overpowering within a radius of three hundred yards, posing a significant health hazard to the public. While the death trap falls under the jurisdiction of the county, the Corporation should assume some responsibility and take immediate action to erect a protective barrier around the area. Such a measure would safeguard both the local population and unsuspecting passersby from the dangers lurking in the vicinity.
