Petitions Election
On 1 February 1900, the official examination of petitions arising from Ireland’s recent local-government elections drew significant attention in Limerick, where the new system of county and district councils had rapidly transformed local political life. The Local Government (Ireland) Act of 1898 had brought direct elections to local bodies, and Limerick’s own contests had seen spirited campaigns, novel alliances, and, in several cases, disputed outcomes.
