Tobacco Experiment
On 12 February 1900, Parliament received reports on experimental tobacco cultivation in County Meath, as well as the manufacture of Irish-grown tobacco at Tullamore. The initiative was part of wider efforts to diversify Irish agriculture and reduce dependence on imported crops. Agricultural officials detailed the progress of trial plots, noting the suitability of Meath’s soil and climate for tobacco plants. Early results were encouraging, with healthy crops harvested and processed for manufacturing. The project sparked interest among local farmers eager to explore new sources of income.
