Officials Reorganisation
Limerick’s civic leaders and residents took keen interest in the implications of Ireland’s recently reorganised local-government system, particularly as discussions on 1 February 1900 in the House of Commons addressed the position of affected officials. The introduction of the Local Government (Ireland) Act of 1898 had, within two years, transformed local administration, replacing grand juries with elected county and district councils. In Limerick city and county, as elsewhere, this reorganisation altered the duties and job security of longstanding officials, raising questions about their future roles and conditions under the new order.
